Solution: Invalid barcode data during import on Dymo LabelWriters (EAN-13)

When you try to add an EAN13 barcode to your label in the Dymo Label Software you can only type in 12 numbers, if you type in 13 it says, "Barcode data is too long for this barcode type"

This is because EAN-13 barcodes are made up of 12 digits plus a single digit checksum, which the Dymo software calculates automatically.  If you are using pre-generated barcodes that already include the checksum, then leave out the last digit.  The Dymo Label Software will then add it back on.

If you are having issues such as the error "Invalid barcode data" while importing EAN-13 barcodes, using the 'data import and print' option, do the following:

  1. Make sure you are only importing 12 digit barcodes (ie. remove the last digit if 13 digits)
  2. Make sure the barcode object in your label layout is set to link to Data and not to Object
  3. (Important) During the import wizard, drag the your 12 digit EAN number to the barcode field, and REMOVE the blue dot after the barcode field -

You should now be able to import and print your EAN-13 barcodes in the Dymo Label Software.

Thanks so much for this! I don't know what I was doing wrong, but somehow once I followed your instructions I finally got it right.
