Dymo LabelWriter prints skewed labels and reports out of paper

If you are experiencing “wonky text”, the label moving about, and the printer reporting out of paper when there are still plenty of labels loaded then the cause is incorrect loading of the labels.  Please see the following diagram on how to correctly load the labels:

Correct dymo label loading on a labelwriter

If there is a gap between the labels and the edges of the spools the labels will drift along the spool, this will then cause the labels to drift across the printhead (leading to skewed text) and also drift past the paper sensor which is on the left (causing it to stop and report “out of paper”).

To fix this problem simply squeeze (gently) the sides of the spool so that they hold the labels securely to prevent sideways movement – simple!

    Hi

Able to print one label on a labelwriter 450, then blue light flashes and tells me out of paper, although plenty on the roll. Spool completely in line. Cleared print queue, but problem still keeps occurring. Is this the sensor on the writer? Just need to know whether to scrap it and buy a new one.

    tks

Are you using compatible labels? They are the main cause of problems like this (feeding half labels, feeding blanks labels, not feeding).

If not, and it was working previously and you haven’t changed the way you’re printing, then it could be a faulty machine. The LW450′s were launched in December 2009, and come with a 3 year warranty, so unless you purchased it in the first month or two after launch it’s probably still under warranty.

So if you go to dymo.com you can register it as a defective machine and get a warranty replacement. You may want to call their technical support first just to confirm that’s the problem.
