News: Dymo D1 Label Redesign affects old Label Makers
Dymo have recently redesigned the Dymo D1 labels, and although this has no effect on more recent labellers the new D1 Labels no longer fit the following (very) old Labelmakers -
Dymo 1000, 2000, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, Dymo Pocket
The D1 labels still have exactly the same codes, so if you have one of these old machines don’t be fooled into thinking that just because the last label that worked was say a 45013 that you just need to buy another 45013 and it will work, because it won’t – the code is the same but the design is (slightly) different.
The new D1 labels will not work in the above machines.
You can still buy the 12mm Yellow tapes in the old shape here: Dymo 45018 for 1000/5000
ps. The “Rhino 1000″ and “Rhino 5000″ printers are different to the above machines with similar model numbers, and are not affected by this issue.
The last of the 45018′s have now been sold, and we are still not aware of anyone else that still has the old tapes.
I recently bought a lot of 45018 and 45013 tapes and they do not fit my Dymo 1000. It is supposed to be normal.
How is it possible to be stupid enough to modify a part, make it incompatible with the original one and keep the same reference? This is simply incredible.
I am now the happy owner of a lot of unusable tapes, I will NOT replace my Dymo 1000 with a new Dymo XXX.
I will buy a Brady, they seem to care about their customers…
.
Yes, I agree it does seem pretty stupid to physically modify the part and not change the part number and it’s causing as many problems for distributors and retailers as well as customers. Just think of all those extra confused customers, customer support calls, returns etc.
It’s especially annoying that they change the part and keep the same part number while at the same time seemingly randomly changing the part numbers of other tapes just for the sake of it even though there’s apparently no change to the tapes themselves.
However, if you purchased the tapes from a reputable supplier they should take them back for a refund, and if not I’m sure if you complained to helpdesk@dymo.com they would do something about it.
Also, to be fair to Dymo, there was a good reason to change the design and it only affected a couple of very old machines. Like most companies Dymo only supports products for a set number of years after the products are discontinued – and the 1000 and 5000 were discontinued donkey’s years ago. In the fast moving world of technology you can’t really expect manufacturers to support obsolete products indefinitely.
With regard to replacing it with a Brady, that seems a bit excessive. The Dymo 1000 is a cheap low end consumer labeler, while the Brady printers are expensive high end professional labelers – so unless your needs have changed you either had the wrong type of labeler or are about to buy the wrong type of labeler… There are other brands you could try if you don’t want Dymo.
